Group Therapy
Group therapy will begin to be offered at Imperfect Progress Counseling in Summer 2024. Groups allow patients to feel heard and seen by more than just one person and to experience a wider range of perspectives on any given issue. Many people find that some of the best mental health treatment comes from working with other people that go through the same struggles as they do. Group therapy creates an environment in which you are not only getting help for yourself, but you are actively helping others.
Our therapist has extensive experience running groups from both her times working in the hospital setting and her days as a teacher. We believe that learning while directly involved with others makes the experience more memorable and lasting while simultaneously better preparing a person to use what they have learned and apply it to the real world. Therapy groups can be held on a variety of topics, and we’d love to hear some of the topics that you are interested in attending a group on. Current topics that we are actively looking for group members for are:
Introduction to DBT (separate adult group and teen group)
DBT is a particularly popular modality being recommended by therapists and psychiatrists alike nowadays, but DBT practices can be hard to find and often expensive. Our therapist has trained in DBT for many years and is well-versed in the program and skills. Because Imperfect Progress Counselling is a small practice and does not have a consultation team, it is not DBT in its original form created by Marsha Linehan.
This group will introduce the modules and associated skills of DBT in a format unique to our therapist designed to work well with teens and young adults. It is therefore not a textbook “skills group” as one might find in a DBT practice, which often takes up to 6 months to fully complete. This group is expected to meet weekly for 6 weeks and will have options to follow up with more advanced DBT groupings to get to know the skills more deeply. Please reach out through this website if you are interested in DBT in a group setting.
Teen Talk, ages 13 to 17
Teens today are finding most of their interactions and information through the internet and social media. This group is designed to give them a way to improve interpersonal skills with their peers while also tackling some of the topics teenagers are most commonly misinformed about when doing their own research online through information provided by our expert. This group will have a large process component, meaning clients will have the ability to come in with issues they are currently facing and talk about them in the group setting in addition to the chosen topic of the week. Topics included in discussion will be some of the more controversial issues facing teens today such as drug use, sex education, self-harm, etc. This group will be led by our therapist who has worked closely with teenagers for nearly 15 years. This group is expected to be an ongoing group that clients can come and go from based on their availability. Registration will close each week when the number of participants reaches capacity. Depending on enrollment, groups may form that focus on smaller age groupings. Please send us a message if you are interested in attending a teen process group and mention any topics you may be interested in learning more about!
